Understanding File Size Units

Decimal (SI) Units

Based on powers of 1000. Used by storage manufacturers.

  • 1 KB = 1,000 bytes
  • 1 MB = 1,000 KB = 1,000,000 bytes
  • 1 GB = 1,000 MB
  • 1 TB = 1,000 GB

Binary (IEC) Units

Based on powers of 1024. Used by operating systems (Windows, Linux, macOS).

  • 1 KiB = 1,024 bytes
  • 1 MiB = 1,024 KiB = 1,048,576 bytes
  • 1 GiB = 1,024 MiB
  • 1 TiB = 1,024 GiB

Example: A 500 GB hard drive (decimal) shows as ~465 GiB (binary) in your OS. Both are correct — they just use different standards.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between KB and KiB?
KB = 1000 bytes (decimal/SI). KiB = 1024 bytes (binary/IEC). Same for MB/MiB, GB/GiB.
Which standard should I use?
Storage manufacturers use decimal (KB, MB, GB). Operating systems often show binary (KiB, MiB, GiB).
